It’s A Family Affair: The Trials and Tribulations of a Tourette Syndrome Diagnosis
Date & Time
Saturday, June 13, 2026
Susan Courey, Ph.D. Mark S. Courey, MD
Description

In this panel presentation, the Courey family comes together to share their experience with their son’s diagnosis of Tourette Syndrome (TS). They candidly share the trials and tribulations of TS in both friendly and unsympathetic environments. In addition, they reflect on the joys and opportunities that have emerged from this outrageous fortune. Receiving a diagnosis of TS can be a profoundly impactful event for families. The complexities surrounding TS necessitate an understanding of the multifaceted challenges that families confront. These challenges include emotional distress, social stigma, educational difficulties, and the need for behavioral interventions. Drs. Susan and Mark Courey, along with their adult son with TS, his wife, and two sisters, discuss how an effective support system evolved with the help of healthcare providers, educators, and advocacy efforts. By fostering awareness and continually seeking appropriate resources, their family learned to navigate the complexities associated with a TS diagnosis and enhance their quality of life.
